Wildlife Rehabilitation Internships for University Students

NWR offers internships to university students to fulfill internship credit in certain fields, or for students wanting to gain hands-on experience in the fields of Wildlife Management, Veterinary Medicine, and Animal Science.  Our spring, fall, and winter internships are volunteer, part-time, and with flexible scheduling. Starting in 2024, our summer internships are full-time, paid internships.

Please note: Proof of current COVID-19 Vaccine is required. 

Spring Internship - Spring Internships take place at the Baldwin Wildlife Center in Omaha, NE.  These internships are volunteer, and all travel, food, and lodging costs are the responsibility of the intern. We will accept applications from any current student of at least sophomore standing or recently graduated university student in the United States. Up to 6 Spring Internships are available mid-February through mid-May.

Duties include:

  • Feeding orphaned wildlife
  • Cleaning and disinfecting wildlife cages and nurseries
  • Assisting in the care of injured and ill adult wildlife
  • Creating and implementing enrichment for wild patients
  • Assisting with the intake of new patients as needed
  • Serving as an ambassador for NWR and Nebraska's native wildlife
  • Documenting patient feeding and medical treatments
  • Cleaning tasks as assigned.

Spring interns will work an average of 21 hours per week during this 12-week internship.

 

Summer Internship (Entry-Level)  Summer Internships take place at the Baldwin Wildlife Center in Omaha, NE.  These internships are full-time, paid internships.  All travel, food, and lodging costs are the responsibility of the intern. We will accept applications from any current student of at least sophomore standing or recently graduated university student in the United States. 12 full-time Level I internships are available each summer.

Duties include:

  • Feeding orphaned wildlife
  • Cleaning and disinfecting wildlife cages and nurseries
  • Assisting in the care of injured and ill adult wildlife
  • Creating and implementing enrichment for wild patients
  • Assisting with the intake of new patients as needed
  • Serving as an ambassador for NWR and Nebraska's native wildlife
  • Documenting patient feeding and medical treatments
  • Cleaning tasks as assigned.

Entry-level Summer Interns work an average of 40 hours per week during this 12-week internship.

 

Summer Internship (Advanced) & Seasonal Staff Positions - These positions take place at the Baldwin Wildlife Center and our satellite site in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. These positions have a low-cost housing option and work an average of 40 hours per week. Applicants for these positions must have a minimum of 250 hours (Advanced Internships) or 500 hours (Seasonal Staff) of previous wildlife rehabilitation experience, with preference given to students having previously completed NWR's Entry Level Internship (any season), and the ability to work independently. Up to six positions are available in the summer of 2024. (*Note: Seasonal Staff Positions are available to those who have already completed an Advanced Summer Internship or its equivalent at another Wildlife Center.)

Duties include:

  • Feeding orphaned wildlife
  • Cleaning and disinfecting wildlife cages and nurseries
  • Assisting in the care of injured and ill adult wildlife
  • Creating and implementing enrichment for wild patients
  • Assisting with the intake of new patients as needed
  • Serving as an ambassador for NWR and Nebraska's native wildlife
  • Documenting patient feeding and medical treatments
  • Cleaning tasks as assigned.
  • Cleaning and care of wildlife in outside pre-release cages.
  • Enrichment and oversight of the wilding and release of wildlife.
  • Participating in rescues and transportation of wildlife.
  • Animal tracking and reporting.

Summer Interns (Advanced) and seasonal staff members will work a minimum of 12 weeks in the summer. 16- and 20-week options may be available.

Applicants must have a minimum of 250 hours (Advanced Internships) or 500 hours (Seasonal Staff) of previous wildlife rehabilitation experience and a valid driver's license.

 

Fall Internship - Fall Internships take place at the Baldwin Wildlife Center in Omaha, NE.  These internships are volunteer, and all travel, food, and lodging costs are the responsibility of the intern. We will accept applications from any current student of at least sophomore standing or recently graduated university student in the United States. Up to 6 Fall Internships are available mid-September through mid-December. Up to 2 Winter Internships are available mid-November through mid-February.
